Lufdesign's Dustpan, Bin Combo concept

Lufdesign created a Dustpan+Bin combo. It looks really neat but I can see where it may have its flaws. The lip is very thick and it may not be the most effective dustpan. But i do like the concept of simply flipping a dust pan 90 degrees to change it from one object to another. The concept pics show crumpled papers, which is something I don't normally through away or sweep up so I would have to see this in action before I plan on buying it.

Designs for hard drives

Samsung's G-Series is made from environmentally-friendly halogen-free plastic. Embossed into the surface is a pattern that changes on the room's light source. Its intent was to "mimic the way sunlight filters through tree leaves as they sway in the wind." And the pattern is not just decorative but also it is scratch ad fingerprint-resistant, and also helps distribute heat.

One & Co is design and engineering company that observe people and their surroundings and culture to build a foundation on which they design. They touch various industries such as sports, fashion, technology, and medical. They are based in California. They teamed up with other popular companies to create different and innovative products like the HTC Diamond

The HTC Diamond is smart phone. The design is both modern and clutter-free to allow a strong focus on the innovative interface. The rich materials and diamond-like surface convey its power and sophication creating an intensely recognizable icon which is great for marketing.


They also recreated the Microsoft mouse and keyboard. The Arc keyboard and mouse, have a distinct arc form and pioneering details. The innovative hinge design and wide array of colors present a highly mobile solution for the younger, style-conscious consumer.

M Industrial Design

M Industrial Design is a company that designs innovative product designs, mechanical engineering solutions, and user focused results for concept and packaging design projects. I never knew what a industrial design company actually designed. I was very please to stumble on to their website. Some of the cool designs they show on their website are:

A Vornado Air Cirulator Flippi

Flippli's dual design air circulator tilts up and down plus it looks cool.


MZX Flat Panel Speakers

Flat and sleek panel speaker system. The panels pivots in all axis for optimum sound and effect and is designed to fit an infinite range of MZX speaker panels.


Jellypod

Designed to restore nature's balance. Saving the marine Eco system is no easy job. This device is triggered by human activity, algal blooms out of control, killing fish, spoiling water. With it modern healing powers, the Jellypod saves our aquatic friends by replenishing depleted oxygen levels through UV lights and emits sound waves that kill any excess algae.

VW Folding Bike Concept

A lot of designers are trying t recreate/redesign the bike. Maybe in the future more people will be riding bikes than cars. Volkswagon new electric bike concept is designed to fold into a circle that fits in the compartment that is usually occupied by the spare tire. It's range is only about 12.5 miles so it wont take you very far but its not meant for long distance treks. It official top speed is only 20 km/h so that Germans can wear it helmentless. The bike runs on batteries and can be charged from the car. It has no pedals so you just hope and and go, similar to that of a scooter but looks cooler. Video

Furniture that comes ALIVE

Author Bodolec designed Jack chairs that he says come alive. His concept to is have a regular box or circular-like object that takes up no space in a room. But once sat on it blossoms like a plant, awaken and turns into a comfortable lounging chair. video

Another cool design from Authur Bodolec is his lapeyr. The lapeyer is a reinvented stairwell. The idea is to have one the stair longer than the others and attached to a wall. The stair will also be above the ground. the stair that is attached to the wall and longer than the rest will be made of a soft material so that someone can relax, sit, and enjoy the stair while not interfering with people walking up and down the stairs.

The Easysafe utility knife

A first glance i thought the knife a bit big and wouldn't be easily stored in small places. But the idea and design is pretty cool. Martor (a company that makes cutting knives and blades) designed the Easysafe to cut towards the user and still remain safe, since the blade is tucked away behind a plastic lever on a hinge it makes cutting safer than an x-acto knife, utility knifes and box cutters. It also makes changing the blade very easy, it uses no tools. The knife is also equipped with a special key so only authorized personnel are able to change the blade. Hotel Concept: Spend a Night in Hollywood

A Danish architecture firm Bay Arch designed a hotel concept built behind the Hollywood sign. The chief draw would be a 300 room hotel behind the letters. It would also house a wellness center, spa, nightclub, and a movie theater. They wanted the sign to be a multi-use commercial complex. Although the concept poses a lot of questions and concerns such as the original letter are not nearly as big as the pictures provide, but all in all the concept is pretty cool.

Wonderlamp

Wonderlamp is a design collaboration between Pieke Bergmans and Studio Job presented by Dimos last week in Milan. Pieke is known for her glass light bulbs. To make her "wonderlamps she uses archetype material using glass he same way we use bronze. Each object has its own idea from light to over bowling pot. The 7 pieces are of everyday life pieces: pots and pans, a torch, and a neon lamp.

Book Scanning Technology

Over the last 5 years book scanning technology has improved greatly. Here's what the state-of-the-art in book scanning looked like circa 2005--a vacuum-based page turner and an overhead camera:

Now a Tokyo University research team led by Masatoshi Ishikawa has developed an even better, faster way, by using software to account for the deformities in a page of text as it's being turned over. Coupled with a camera shooting at 500 frames per second, this means you can flip through the book quickly and manually:

USB memory stick with color!

It seems that a lot of designer want to change the look of the usb drive. Mac Funamizu's USB Memory Stick #6 concept is pretty cool. The memory stick would be covered in glass and a light will shine in the inside represeting data saved in it. If there is no light shown there is no data, and if there is light filling the space there is no more space. The data woould be recognized with colors. For example, pink is images, blue is documents, and green for movies etc. Hopefully when this becomes marketable you will be able to play tiwht the lights in the glass. This is only a prototype and hopefully it will be marketable.

CRYSTALS

Swarovski's Crystal place in Zona Tortona is a site to see. A few designers took on the challenge and Gwenael Nicolas's "Sparks" is simply beautiful. A clump of crystals, acrylic, and LEDs are suspended in the middle if a clear plastic beach wire. The balls are filled with balloons and strewn, floating, throughput a room.

Tokujin Yoshioka created a giant Swarovski crystal almost the size of a chandelier. It is 1m glob encrusted with crystals and LED's.

The Future to Cleaning

The Ionator EXP designed by a company called Activeion cleaning solutions, is now being marketed and distributed thoughtout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This Ionator uses high technology to ionize regular tap water and makes it an sanitizer spray which is chemical-free. The ionized water attracts dirt like a magnet and lifts it from the surface making it easy to wipe.

How does it Work?

"Developed from advanced high-cost technology used in food-processing plants and four-star restaurants, the Ionator EXP uses ionization to convert tap water into a powerful sanitizer that's been tested and confirmed to kill 99.9 percent of common bacteria with a simple six-second spray of nontoxic ionized water."

These bottles are about a foot tall and looks like power drills. they are a bit expensive however. The Inonizer HOM (household version) starts at $169 and the professional grade is $329 but they are supposed to last for 3-5 years replacing your old chemical induced cleaners.

Urban Bike Sharing!!??

B-Cycle is the new way of getting around the city or campus. It's great for your health, environment, and economical. It is very similar to a zip car. B-Cycle is fast, inexpensive and simple. It is very popular in France. B-Cycle measure the actual distance traveled on each ride and keeps trace of the calories you've burned and the carbon emissions prevented.

B-Cycle is a collaboration among three major American companies

• Trek Bicycle Corporation


• Crispin Porter + Bogusky

**There major goal is to change the way you get around.

Different B-Cycle systems charge different amounts (cities, campuses, etc). The cost to use a B-cycle is divided into membership fee and usage fees.

B-cycle in Denver is aiming to be the first city to have bike sharing as of April 1st.

Evan Roth

Evan Roth came to Hofstra to speak to us about his success as a graphic designer. He formally was interested in architecture but realized he could use his creative side in architecture so he decided to become a graphic designer. At a young age he becomes very interested in curse words. His first experience was listening to a rap group named NWA. In college he recreated the NWA album and instead of remixing it he reduced it. He only left the curse words and created a song from it. I knew he was rebel soon after. Evan was also interested in graffiti. He studied graffiti tagged on buildings from lower Manhattan. He created a whole database so that people can dissect the letters and read the graffiti. He also created a graffiti laser tag where there is a projector and a laser in which a computer reads. With this device you are able to project writings on buildings. He did this experiment in different cities around the world (Hong Kong, NYC). He also created LED throwies which are magnetic LED lights. Some tips he gave me about publishing my works of art are, don’t be afraid, get your work out there, even if someone take your works they don’t have the same ideas as you, you’re the one with the idea, people have taken his work by the gets the most hits and is known for his work. Evan Roth was very inspirational and I enjoyed his presentation.
