HeatSwell

Scott Amron is an electrical engineer, designer, conceptual artist, and founding principal of Amron Experimental. He designed a new variation of the coffee up. It has built in sleeves to handle cold and hot beverages. If you pour a hot beverage such as: tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc. the thin stackable cub will swell into what he calls a "cool insulating collar". It is a 100% genuine endothermic reaction. Any hot beverage will activate the band. It is pretty cool but VERY CREEPY. It has a knitted-on cloth towel feel and is non toxic and FDA approved. The whole design is recyclable and biodegradable. It also will not swell at shipping temperatures because that would not be good. Overall i do like the concept but i do think if the collar gets to big it gets this creepy look to it and grosses me out a little.

Bamboo Flow Light

Igendesign was founded by Daniel Lorincz and Alberto Vasquez. Which is based in Hungary. They study industrial design at Budapest University of Technology and Economics and at he Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest.. Igendesign created what they call "Flow", which they want to become a public light for Third World countries. It operates on the principle of vertical wind. The lamp is made out of bamboo, wires and LED lighting and it is fully recyclable. The Bamboo is cut in half and the lamp is inserted. The bamboo is cut at an angle so the light is pointed downward. Due to the spiral form, the lamp can hold the wind from every direction and create different lighting effects. The idea of Flow is to create lighting on the shores of oceans because there is very little lighting at night, which makes it dangerous. Bamboo is one of the cheapest to produce and is eco friendly.

Clock Jar

Oren Hetzroni, fourth year industrial design major at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, designed what he calls a Clock in a Jar. He was inspired by childhood memories of having insects in a jar. He states that a first glance the arms of the clock look similar to that of butterfly wings. The hands are hung vertically and move around the circumference of the top of the jar. The glass jar is numbered by the hour. You can buy it here for 15$/5$ for shipping.

Wanderest

Nichola Trudgen (Bronze winner in the Best Design Awards 2009 for product) designed what he calls the Wanderest. The Wanderest is an object that can be used for seating or resting if you need a break from walking. Trudgen designed the Wanderest with the elderly in mind. Trugen says that walking is the healthiest and easiest way to be mobile, but the elderly often need to take breaks while they walk because they become tired easily. Lamp post are the ideal resting stops because there are a lot of them on one block. The Wanderest could be used for flat surfaces, in bus waiting areas, hospitals, banks or just as a leaning station. The Wanderest is cost efficient and made of three identical panels injection-molded from a recycled Wood Plastic Composite. (an environmentally-friendly and easy-to-maintain material) The seat can be attached with either a bolt or two steel straps.

Folding Colander

Joseph Joseph is a company that designs kitchenware products. They created a interested product called the Folding Colander. It can be a flat board or fold into a rectangular Colander with handles. You simply fold and snap then lock the four flaps together. This then creates a base and four sides. Since it can unlock into a board, it is better for storing. Regular Colanders are hard to store because they are so big and bulky. This Colander is made out of polypropylene and is dishwasher safe. It comes in various bight colors (red, pink, white, black and green). They are also available online through their website for $20.00.

The Incognito SAFE

Southwest Specialty Products designed a new kind of safe where you can hide your valuables in plain sight. They created the Diversion Save where they have 100% genuine products re manufactured into safe storage safes. They include Ajax container, Scotch Gard-Pet Care protector, Magic Fabric Sizing, food products- Kibbles and Bits Dog Food, Del Monte Fruit Cocktail, potatoes, corn etc. They are all designed with a seamless screw-off top or button to allow concealment inside the container. All "trademarks are registered but the original manufactures and used by permission or license granted by the trademark owners to Southwest Specialty Products". In order to buy these products you must either call or fax a form to them and they will send you the Diversion Safe. I thought this was a cleaver idea because no one will look in a Ajax can for money or jewelry. It's like having a secret book in a book shelf that opens he wall!

Furture Bike?

John Villareal, a senior designer, designed a Futurist Bicycle. He says, it is "a design that shows a peek into the future as materials and manufacturing advance. Our ability to manufacture lighter frames with increasing strength of materials will allow us to make shapes that today would structurally fail." What makes this design really cool are the hubless wheels, hubless pedal-crank assembly, and the connection for the crossbar, which looks like it is adjustable to make the bike smaller for storage. Another cool feature are the wheels. they appear to have only two pieces of rubber and chain in the middle of them. I have seen a prototype bike from students from Yale who had to create a similar bike for an assignment for class. I can almost see, that this is how our bikes will look like in the future, when we have the right materials to actually manufacture them.

Cargo shell

Entrepreneur Renà Giesbers designed a cargo container for trucks to transport items through the country. Its called the Cargoshell. It is very similar to the original cargo containers t it can fold within a min. The Cargoshell can reduce the emission of CO2 because it is manufactured from composites, which makes them lighter than a steel container. Since they are lighter they save energy in transportation. They are also cost efficient. In all the Cargoshell provides " A more environmentally friendly way to transport goods"

Bobble Water

Similar to the ideas of the Vapur, Bobble is a redesign of the water bottle designed by Richard Smiedt and Karim Rashid. This water bottle is very cool looking, comes in various different colors (blue, red, pink, green, black , and yellow), and has a filter cap on the top of the bottle. You can buy Bobble online for only $9.95 and the filter is $6.95. As you drink from the water bottle, it filters the water before it hits your mouth. You have to replace the filter about once or twice a year, it is FDA approved and made from recyclable products. The Bobble team hope to reduce the use of plastic water bottles and in turn make our planet healthier for generations to come.

  • save image as EPS (high quality format) more resolution is good for resolution
  • Dark parts of the picture are called shadows
  • Photographers put plastic over windows to change the color temperature
  • use the dodge tool to change the highlight, midtones, and shadows. (start at a low %)

Biking at night becomes safer!

Designers Alex Tee and Evan Gant at Altitude Inc. designed what they call "LightLane bicycle add-on". They hope to make bicycling safter at night. It was proven that the most effective method of protecting cyclists on the roads are bike lanes. They are found randomly and rarely in the the city and that is because installation cost $5,000 to$50,000 per mile. So to save the city some money, cyclists can create their own lanes with a laser projecting what looks like a bike lane. Its still a prototype but it might be in stores soon!

Seating Pod Concept

A student at the Florence Design Academey, Sekhar Roy, developed a new way of designing a Terrance bar with seating. The Seating pod looks very much like the tea pots ride in Disney World. I think the idea of the swooping arm holding interchangeable light fixtures. To create the design concept he used 3Ds max, Photoshop, and VRay. I think the design looks very futuristic and with a few changes I could see it being manufactured.

Segmentus Clock

The Art Lebedev Studio's newest design is the Segmentus clock. It's pretty much old school analog clocks modernized. This digital clock has hands that form numbers similar to that on digital display clocks. It comes in two different colors, black and white. It has 6 different hands to create 9 different numbers. The clock is still a prototype and I think it should be. I really think the whole hand idea to create different numbers is pretty cool. I feel as if i could watch the time go by and not get bored. My only opposition to the product is the bulkiness of it. It would take to much on my desk as home and in my dorm so I probably wouldn't buy it because of that reason. However if they did make one that hung on the wall then i would probably be more inclined to buy it.

DIY Lamps

A Swedish company called lampGustaf designed what they call a stitch lamp. The lamp is a mesh so you can crochet your own design on the lamp. It comes with a needle and yarn with eight different colors. LampGustaf say that the design will be manufactured in May and they will have downloadable patterns online and a place where you could upload creations that you have done of your own.

Not All Artist Are Starving!

"Not All Artist Are Starving" was an event held on Tuesday, March 2nd 2010. It was hosted by a club from Hofstra called HAGA (Hofstra's Association for Graphic Artists). This event was very formal and informative. It was a night of social networking with Hofstra alumni and current employers who actually hold various jobs in the arts. These speakers included Mieki Anekawa, Yvonne Dagger, Amy Dresser, Amy Odell, Sean O'Kane, Christine Tyrell, Marc Whalen, and Letha Wilson. They were all excellent speakers and gave a real eye opener to us students who plan on becoming a designer or having a career in the fine arts. A few encouraging marks I remember form the event are:
  • It is a good idea to intern
  • don't quite your day job
  • things don't always come out the way you planned them. Expect accidents to happen and they can happen for the better
  • "Realize the shadow you live in...NYC", take advantage of it
  • Don't loose hope and have fun!
Thank you Haga for hosting this event. It was successful and I plan on becoming a Haga member in the near future!

rings that are literally 25cents

I stumbled accross this post that I found very interesting parrtly because I love DIYs and becaiuse I love rings, but dont like spending the money on them. The post tells how you can create a ring out of a quarter made from 1964 or earlier. Any coin made later isnt made of silver and will leave a ring around your fingre. To make the quarter into a ring you have to hammer it until it is smooth around the edges then drill through the middle of the coin until it fits your finger. Pretty Cool!

Recycleable Sneakers

I learned from a posting on Core77.com that Nike recycle any sneakers. They divide the sneaker into three different sections that eventually make Nike Grind. There are two facilities in which the recycling takes place. Wilsonville, Oregon and Meerhout, Belgium.

Nike Grind Rubber is made from the outsole of the sneaker. This rubber is used in track surfaces, gym floor tiles, playground surfaces and new Nike products. It can also be used to trim buttons and zipper pulls.

Nike Grind Foam is made from the shoe's midsole. The foam is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball courts and tennis courts.

Nike Grind Fiber is made from the sneaker's fabric upper. The fiber is used as part of the creation of cushioning pads for facilities, such as indoor synthetic courts and wood courts.

Nike Reuse-A-Shoe have various drop off sites around the world, or you can mail them. You can recycle as many as 10 pairs of athletic shoes at a time. You just have too find a drop off site.
